Styled with Care: Crystal, Fred, and Pam — Video

Person-centered care in action: Meet Crystal, a fashionista, and her caregiver Pam from Brightstar Care of Gastonia, NC

To Crystal, style is more than just a fashionable outfit it’s the way in which she expresses herself.

Ever since her stroke at the age of 51, expressing herself has been difficult. But her father, Fred, and her caregiver, Pam, have made sure that Crystal can still feel like Crystal every single day. And that starts with fashion and, as Crystal likes to say: “bling bling”.

At home in North Carolina, Crystal and Pam assemble an outfit for the day, playfully trying on colorful scarves, hats, and sunglasses in the mirror. The ensemble Crystal ultimately chooses a rich yellow blouse with gold jewelry is perfectly symbolic of her sunny personality.

“Crystal has always had that right attitude,” says Pam, beaming at Crystal by her side. “With her, you can’t be sad because she makes everyone around her feel so welcome.”

As the two of them embark on an afternoon walk, both donning bright, unquestionably-cool sunglasses, Crystal smiles up at Pam from her wheelchair: “Me and you,” she says, “together forever.”

They’re the coolest two people on the block.
