Why conduct a cost of care survey?

We've conducted this survey for 20+ years to help give more families the information they need to talk about and plan for long-term care needs. The American population is aging faster than ever before, and people are living longer. Every day until 2030, 10,000 Baby Boomers will turn 65^a and 7 out of 10 people will require long-term care in their lifetime^b.

The cost of that care varies based on care setting, geographic location of care and the level of care required, among other things. Using the Cost of Care Survey tool, you and your family can calculate the cost of long-term care across the U.S., now and in the future. Understanding what the median cost is today is a first step to helping you plan for it.

Care costs have changed significantly since Genworth began the Cost of Care Survey in 2004. Below, explore how costs have changed for different long-term care options.

National hourly cost for a Home Health Aide in 2024 as reported hourly.

In-home care includes home health aides, who provide "hands-on" personal assistance, and homemaker services, who complete "hands-off" tasks such as cooking or cleaning.
While home health aide costs rose just 3% in 2024, homemaker services rose 10%. Two-thirds of home care agencies surveyed now charge the same rate for both types of service.

Private room nursing home costs

Annual National Median cost for a Nursing Home Private Room in 2024 based on 365 days of care.

In 2024, the national annual median cost of a semi-private room in a skilled nursing center rose to $111,325, an increase of 7%, while the cost of a private room in a skilled nursing center increased 9% to $127,750.

Assisted living community costs

Annual National Median cost for Assisted Living Facility care services in 2024 based on the monthly fee multiplied by 12 months.

Assisted living community costs increased by 10% to an annual national median cost of $70,800 per year. Occupancy rates also increased year-over-year, from 77% to 84%, which may have helped drive higher rates.
